Chase the Dark (Steel and Stone book 1) by Annette Marie

Piper Griffiths wants one thing in life: To become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons. There are precisely three obstacles in her way.

The first is Lyre. Incubus. Hotter than hell and with a wicked streak to match. His greatest mission in life is to get Piper into bed and otherwise annoy the crap out of her. The second is Ash. Draconian. Powerful. Dangerous. He knows too much and reveals nothing. Also, disturbingly attractive — and scary. Did she mention scary?

The third is the Sahar Stone. Top secret magical weapon of mass destruction. Previously hidden in her Consulate until thieves broke in, went on a murder spree, and disappeared with the weapon.

And they left Piper to take the fall for their crimes.

Now she’s on the run, her dreams of becoming a Consul shattered and every daemon in the city gunning to kill her. She’s dead on her own, but there’s no one she can trust — no one except two entirely untrustworthy daemons... See problems one and two.

My Thoughts & obsession Review:

Complimentary copy was given by publisher for a honest review
Highly Recommended, especially fantasy readers, and moving this book into my 2014 memorable reads!
Cover: LOVE! It's what made me want to read more and was spot on in describing the book. The sword in the girls hand made me hope for the kick-ass female and it delivered.
Genre(s): Fantasy, Young Adult, teen (16+), Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy
Tags: dragons, incubus, underworld, Hades, demons, actions, battles, romance
Romance: No undressing but it was HOT

I have been searching, searching...looking for a fantasy book to blow my mind away and get me lost into their world like some of my top favorites do. One clicking away Ebooks, nothing was satisfying my need for what I wanted...until NOW!

I'm OVER excited, understatement of a word, that I have found my 'dream' book!

Let's make sure I have my checklist right and what I LOVED about this book:
  • Kick ass female = check
  • Fantasy world = check
  • Hot leading man = double check and increasing in this case
  • Action, adventurous, with more kicking-ass = CHECK
  • Creatures = dragons, incubus then yes check
  • O yes...Dragons anyone?? = check
Now you see where I'm coming from?! I could keep the list going but I don't want to spoil it all! A book that will cause a sleepless night or staring at your kindle every chance you get, fingers twitching to turn it on and just read a line or two...or maybe a few chapters! That's THIS book!

Can you tell my obsession?? It's been a while since I found a book as such and I must share it to the world, especially fans of Amy Bartol Premonition series and Heir of Fire Series by Sarah J Mass! (Flying kick here)

Where do I begin?!
Piper is training to be a member of the Consulate. Her father, Quinn is head consulate of over 300 consulate locations and in possession with strongest jewel of the underworld, the Sahar.
“Our primary purpose as an embassy isn’t to protect daemons from one another. Our purpose is to protect the human community by regulating and controlling daemons. If we can’t control daemons, we cease to be useful and we will lose the backing—and funding—of the government. Without their support, we have no power.”
Her father gives her a mission on 'babysitting' two daemons while he attends to an important meeting about the Sahar. The daemons, an incubus Lyre and draconian Ash...don't forget Ash's companion, a small dragonet cat like Zwi!
With effort, she closed her mouth. Damn. Ash was . . . was badass. Dark, sexy, and oh-so-yummy badass. Lyre oozed so much sensuality she’d never really noticed Ash that way before.
The meeting is infiltrated and Piper is now on the run from authority accused of stealing the Sahar that yields the strongest power of all. Not only is she chased by the prefects but hunters/mercenaries of the underworld ruled by different family's, Hades being one of them. Ash and Lyre join in with Piper both becoming fugitive as well. Piper must figure out where her missing father is, his part in the Sahar, and who caused all the disruption chaos! The trio goes through many battles to include a bad-ass scene of Piper fighting in a ring, round after round with daemons!

My favorite type of book includes a kick-ass female. I've been waiting for an author to not only write a kick-ass female lead BUT show the readers what she got! Let me introduce you to Piperel, known as Piper, feisty haemon (half human and demon)
So maybe her tight, dark-wash jeans with the knees torn out and her black halter top with a lace-up front weren’t professional enough for an Apprentice Consul. Or maybe her shoulder-length hair, streaked black and red, wasn’t sleek and blonde enough for him. Too bad for him Consuls didn’t have a dress code. She could boot his ass to the curb no matter what she was wearing—theoretically, anyway. She turned to Ether. “Can you tell
Piper is young but not foolish. The author writes as she should be, not as a superwoman but a half human. She is not invincible but a skilled fighter and still feels pain as any other.
The minotaur charged. Piper leaped forward and the beast’s fist smashed into the floor where she’d been standing. Tiles shattered and the cement beneath split. She landed between its massive hooves. Collapsing into a compact ball, she rolled out from under it and sprang up. It took all her willpower not to look into the lounge for Ash. The minotaur was already turning. She grabbed a nearby metal chair and swung it into the back of the minotaur’s knee. It grunted angrily and spun around. She dove between its legs again, landing in another roll that carried her farther away from it. She came out on her feet and ran. She made it three steps before she realized she wasn’t going anywhere. A wall of a dozen armed prefects, rifles raised, blocked the hallway. “Fire!” someone yelled. Piper threw herself onto the floor. The minotaur howled as twelve bullets tore into its flesh. Not enough to kill it, but as she craned her neck to look over her shoulder, it staggered backward into the lounge.
Fear not, there's more, a lot more fighting scenes that star Piper! Now, let me introduce the main man!
Name: Ashtaroth Origin: Underworld (region unknown) Caste: Draconian Age: 18-21 Risk Level: 5
Hmmm Dragon...Ash... At first I thought asshole... And  more asshole but he slips and a soft side is shown a few times and quick enough to fall for him! (Swoon worthy) <3
A low growl, rising from deep in his chest, made her freeze. With escalating terror, she brought a hand down to touch his upper arm. Her fingers didn’t meet skin. Instead, they found a cool, leathery texture. With shaking fingers, she traced one of the armor-like scales that plated his arms. She remembered vividly the sight of his arm, those wide black scales and long claws, from her one glimpse of him without glamour. Those claws were now hooked in the bottom hem of her shirt.
Lyre, sexy Incubus! Loved him! If Piper gets stuck picking one of these as her future love, I would be stuck in the middle!
"Only if you come with me," he breathed, shifting closer. Piper stepped back, her breath catching as Lyre's eyes went dark. Warmth spilled through her in a rising blush as his gaze slowly slid down her and back up again, lingering in obvious places before coming to rest on her mouth. He slid closer still and Piper stepped back only to thump into Ash, still standing in the doorway to his room. She lurched forward but Lyre had closed the gap. She stood between them with nowhere to go, caught in the heat of their bodies, heart pounding."

The author also included many comical parts into the story that made it even better and a flowing read.
“Hi,” she said breathily, batting her eyelashes. Unfortunately, she wasn’t a succubus, so the man stared at her for only a second before he looked at the oblivious Ash with an “is she effing crazy?” look. Ash was still holding her hand. She slung her other arm around the man’s neck and cuddled in. “I missed you, daddy,” she cooed in a little girl voice. “Where have you been?” She giggled brainlessly.

This author is beyond talented in her writing! She explains in vivid, informative details, not in any boring sense, the whole book. While I was reading, she covered all her sixes to explain each character to the five "W's", what, why, when, where, who...even how (that's an H o_O)
I love her writing style, it flowed perfectly and easy to understand the vision she had for "Chase the Dark".

There's no point of lying, I will be STALKING Ms Annette Marie's pages until the next book is released.
